The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to restoring permanent peace and security to Plateau State and the wider federation.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to Governor Caleb Mutfwang at the Government House in Jos on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the COAS characterized the state as a “strategic partner” and a primary hub for the Army’s Armoured Corps. The visit was part of an operational tour of military formations within the region.
Lieutenant General Shaibu acknowledged the complexity of the security issues facing the state but maintained that the challenges are surmountable through enhanced intelligence sharing and stakeholder cooperation.
“The Nigerian Army will continue to deploy its personnel and resources professionally to mitigate security threats and ensure the protection of lives and property,” the COAS stated, adding that lasting peace is achievable through collective effort.
In response, Governor Mutfwang congratulated the COAS on his appointment as the 25th Chief of Army Staff. He commended the troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE for their proactive measures, which he credited for the peaceful 2025 Christmas and New Year period in the state.
While acknowledging that the military is currently stretched by multiple nationwide deployments, the Governor pledged continued state support for both kinetic (combat) and non-kinetic (community engagement) operations to address remaining security gaps.
During his tour, Lieutenant General Shaibu also met with the Gbong Gwom Jos, His Majesty Da Jacob Gyang Buba. The traditional ruler pledged to support the military’s efforts by educating the youth on the importance of sustaining the current peace.
The visit highlights a continuing strategy of civil-military collaboration between the Nigerian Army, state administrations, and traditional institutions to stabilize the region.
