The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu has charged the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA)to intensify research aimed at improving productivity and yield in animal farming in Nigeria. This is in view of worrying statistics indicating that despite accounting for about 35 percent of the continent’s Gross Domestic Products GDP, agriculture with exception of few countries is characterized by the lowest productivity in the world. This the Minister while declaring open a three day workshop on Animal Biotechnology Application and Regulatory Perspective in Abuja said has adversely affected African Economies with severe implications on the people’s livelihood. Onu said the workshop is targeted at changing the narrative and initiate the process of deployment of science and technology in modern Agricultural practice in Africa. Earlier in his remarks, Director General of NABDA Abdullahi Mustapha highlighted possible gains of the workshop. The theme of the virtual workshop with participants drawn from across the globe is ” Animal Biotechnology, the next Frontier”.
