Abuja Raids: Rights Activists Celebrate Court Judgment Against AEPB, Security Agents

Gender based activists from different Civil Society Organisations have given a thumbs up to a judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja that awarded damages against the Abuja Environmental Protection Board AEPB and other security agents for illegal arrest of some women on the streets of Abuja. Security Agents under the command of the Federal Capital Territory authorities invaded clubs, hotels, supermarkets and other centres of business in the city on April 26, 2019 and arrested about six women on the allegations that they were sex workers. Through their lawyers, the women filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja and the court delivered a judgment in their favour, awarding four million naira damages against the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, AEPB and others. Briefing journalists at the headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission in Abuja, the activists described the court judgment as a victory for women and human rights in Nigeria. The CSOs which comprises Abuja Global Shapers, Adopt A Goal, Amnesty International Nigeria and others commended the court for its boldness saying that the judgement reassures women that their rights matter. According to the activists the court also issued an injunction restraining police and others from arresting women in such circumstances that discriminate against their gender.
