The Armed Forces of Nigeria has intensified multi-domain operations across the country throughout February 2026, resulting in the neutralization of numerous terrorists, the arrest of hundreds of suspects, and the successful rescue of 408 kidnapped victims.
Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed these developments during a monthly media briefing at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja. He emphasized that the military is leveraging advanced intelligence and inter-agency cooperation to dismantle threats from terrorists, kidnappers, and economic saboteurs while adhering to international humanitarian standards.
Major Gains in the Northeast and Northwest
Under Operation Hadin Kai in the Northeast, troops crippled the logistics of terrorist factions. Key achievements this month included:
- 85 suspects arrested and 46 insurgents surrendered alongside their families.
- 104 kidnapped victims rescued.
- A major engagement on February 20 in the Kukawa-Nuka area of Borno State, where troops repelled an assault by terrorists using gun trucks and five drones.
- Interception of a truck carrying 460 bags of fertilizer in Yobe State, preventing the materials from being repurposed by enemy forces for explosive devices.
In the Northwest, Operation Fansan Nyama reported the rescue of 251 hostages across Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara states. On February 21, troops notably rescued 21 victims in Katsina State just 48 hours after their abduction.
Targeted Strikes in North Central and South-South
Operation Enduring Peace (Plateau State) and Operation Whirl Stroke (Benue, Taraba, and Nasarawa) focused on quelling farmer-herder clashes and banditry.
- In Taraba State, a key terrorist was apprehended on February 21 with 2.44 million Naira in cash.
- Military initiatives have expanded beyond kinetic strikes to include vocational training and youth empowerment to prevent radicalization.
In the Niger Delta, Operation Delta Safe ramped up its campaign against oil theft. Troops destroyed 32 illegal refinery sites and recovered over 144,000 liters of crude oil. Additionally, intelligence-led raids in Cross River State led to the discovery of a local arms fabrication workshop, where pistols and specialized tools were seized.
Security During Religious Seasons
As the periods of Lent and Ramadan begin, Major General Onoja urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities via the national emergency line, 193.
”The achievements of this month exemplify our steadfast dedication to building a safe and secure Nigeria,” Onoja stated, speaking on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Olatunji Oso Olonishakin. He reaffirmed that the military would sustain its momentum to consolidate gains in civil authority and regional stability.
