401 Special Forces Brigade Celebrates WASA 2025, Reaffirms Loyalty To National Peace

The 401 Special Forces Brigade of the Nigerian Army marked the conclusion of its 2025 training year with the Joint West African Social Activities (WASA) on Saturday, January 24, 2026.

Held at the Joe Akaahan Cantonment in Makurdi, the event served as both a cultural celebration and a formal recommitment to military discipline and national security.

Tradition and Purpose

Major General Moses Kolo Gara, Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), attended as the Special Guest of Honour.

In his address, General Gara highlighted the historical roots of WASA, tracing it back to the West African Frontier Force (WAFF).

He noted that the tradition was established to alleviate the pressures of military life and foster unity through cultural expression among personnel.

A Call to Discipline and Neutrality

Addressing the troops, General Gara emphasized the Nigerian Army’s constitutional mandate to safeguard democracy.

He issued a stern warning against any involvement in activities that could destabilize the nation.

”Discipline is the backbone of the Nigerian Army,” Gara stated, aligning his remarks with the Chief of Army Staff’s vision of a professional, combat-ready, and resilient force.

He urged personnel to avoid illegal acts that could tarnish the service’s reputation and stressed the importance of remaining a neutral, decisive force within a multi-agency environment.

Honoring Sacrifices

The Force Commander took a moment to acknowledge the “patience and sacrifices” of military families and the bravery of troops currently engaged in operations against insurgency and banditry.

He also extended formal condolences to the families of soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty over the past year.

Community and Collaboration

The event was characterized by:

  • Cultural Displays: Traditional dances and cuisines representing Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups.
  • Recognition: Award presentations to soldiers who demonstrated exceptional performance in 2025.
  • Civil-Military Relations: Appreciation for civilian partners and host communities for their continued support of security operations.

Brigadier General KO Bukoye, Commander of the 401 Special Forces Brigade, and Lieutenant Colonel SI Agwom, Commanding Officer of the 72 Special Forces Battalion, were commended for the successful organization of the festivities.

The ceremony concluded with an optimistic outlook for 2026, with leadership urging continued synergy between the military, security agencies, and the public to ensure regional peace.
