As part of efforts to change the narrative and enforce an ideology based political party system in Nigeria,the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, in partnership with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy WDF, have commenced sensitisation dialogue with the nation’s 18 political parties in Nigeria. At a one day workshop organised in Abuja, both organizations were of the views that after two decades of the return to democratic governance, the political parties still lack performance indicators that clearly distinguished them from the first republic. One of the keynote speaker at the interface,Prof Jibril Ibrahim,expressed worry about the many incidence of the nation’s political parties are found wanting in adhering to internal party democracy, inclusiveness, gender balance, and other democratic tenet’s. Other speakers on their part highlighted reasons that may drive the change in narrative especially in delivery of democratic dividends to the people. The need for the nation’s 18 political parties to operate inline with their set objectives and manifestos informed the one day workshop.
