The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has expressed worry over the spate of attacks on it’s facilities ahead of the 2023 general elections.
INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu raised the alarm at an emergency meeting of the Inter agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) at the Commission Headquarters in Abuja.
He said the meeting was necessitated in regards to the twin attacks at INEC offices in Ogun and Osun States on Thursday 10th of November, as well as the increasing spate of attacks during electioneering campaigns by political parties.
Yakubu expressed concern that no urgent and decisive steps are taken, the attacks will affect the peaceful conduct of the polls.
Meanwhile,the National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno retired assured Nigerians of president Buhari directive to security agencies to deal with threats that could scuttle the peaceful conduct of next year’s election.
The Inspector General of Police, Baba Alkali also restated the commitment of the force to protect INEC properties and its staff including every other persons in Nigeria before, during and after 2023 election.
The meeting had representations from police, Army Airforce. DSS, Federal Fire Service and other security agencies..
