The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to eliminating security threats, declaring that the military will “give no quarter” to those seeking to undermine the nation’s democracy. In a goodwill message released in Abuja to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, General Oluyede paid glowing tribute to fallen heroes, describing their sacrifice as the “heavy price” paid for the peace and liberty currently enjoyed by the country.Honouring the Fallen and Their FamiliesThe CDS noted that the legacy of those who died in the line of duty remains forever etched in the nation’s history. “Their ‘today’ was given for our ‘tomorrow’,” the General stated, emphasizing that their devotion was a “calling to patriotism” rather than a mishap. He further extended his gratitude to the families of the deceased, praising their resilience and assuring them that the military would never renege on ensuring their loved ones’ legacies endure.Warning to AdversariesAddressing active-duty personnel across various theaters of operation, General Oluyede commended their professionalism and “battle scars,” which he described as silent testaments to their valour. He issued a stern warning to insurgents and other criminal elements, stating that the consequences of their “hubris” would result in disappointment.”Our Armed Forces will continue to root out all threats to our national security, both local and trans-border,” the CDS declared, asserting that the military would never mortgage the cradle of Nigeria’s national heritage.New Military Strategic PhilosophyGeneral Oluyede used the occasion to highlight his “Military Strategic Philosophy,” which focuses on:Enhanced Jointness: Consolidating the capabilities of the Army, Navy, and Air Force for a reinforced operational posture.Welfare and Administration: Prioritizing troop well-being and sound administration as a core pillar of readiness.Whole-of-Government Approach: Collaborating with civil authorities and other security institutions to guarantee sovereignty and prosperity.Call for National UnityThe CDS expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his “steadfast leadership” and strategic guidance. He also thanked the spouses of military personnel for “bravely manning the home front.”Concluding his message, General Oluyede appealed to all Nigerians to use the remembrance period to promote national unity and reject divisive rhetoric. He urged citizens to wear the remembrance emblem with pride, viewing it as a symbol of gratitude to the unsung heroes keeping the nation safe.
