50% Nigerian Schools Lack Basic Furniture- UBEC

The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, Hamid Bobboyi, has called for increase in the consolidated revenue funds acruing to the Commission from the current 2 to 5 percent.

Bobboyi gave the indication at a one-day Civil Society Organisations CSO-Legislative Round Table Meeting in Abuja.

He said the plea is inview of emerging constraints in basic education delivery necessitated by insecurity challenges bedeviling the country among others.

The UBEC boss further attributed the concerns to reasons why over 50 percent of schools in the country lack basic furniture’s. Other stakeholders including

the Chairman, Senate Committee on Basic Education, commended the efforts of UBEC at repositioning the nation’s basic school sector but were also quick to draw attention to the trend of poor maintenance culture in the system.

The need to increase budgetary provisions to the education sector was also stressed at the meeting.
