IWD 2022:Women Staged Protests Against Gender Bias.

Nigeria joins the rest of the world to observe the International Women’s Day commemorated every march 8 to reflect on the status of women and highlight the many areas in which their rights are still being undermined including progress made.

As expected, women in different parts of the world use the day to come together and celebrate one another and rally for equal treatment and representation.

However,the mode of celebration in Nigeria was not the usual tall show arrangement as various women groups under the leadership of the National women commission of the Nigeria Labour Congress took to the streets of the Abuja metropolis to protest against the decision of the National Assembly to vote against the adoption of five gender bills

Chairperson of the NLC women commission, Comrade Salamatu Aliu while addressing the gathering described the lawmakers action as unfortunate,saying it signifies the continuation of patriarchal structure in the society.

Other women took turns to appeal to the conscience of the Lawmakers to reconsider the rejected bills.

The theme of the 2022 International Women’s Day is” Breaking the Bias”.
