2023: INEC Announces New Dates For General Elections

Following the signing of the electoral amendment bill into law by president Muhammadu Buhari on February 25, 2022 the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has announced new dates for the 2023 general elections.

From the new timetable, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, February 25, 2023, while governorship and state houses of assembly elections will hold on March 11, 2023.

INEC National Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu who made the announcement at a news conference in Abuja explained that the new date is to allow for conformity with the provisions of the Electoral laws which stipulates that elections notice be published at least 260 days before the elections.

The INEC National Chairman further disclosed plans by the commission to conclude and publish new Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of the Elections in line with the Act.

Other highlights in the new timetable as released by the nation’s electoral umpire indicate that submission of nomination forms by political parties for presidential and national assembly election is slated for 10th June to 17th June 2022 while Governorship and state assemblies is 1st July to 15th July 2022.

The new timetable further stipulates that all political parties are expected to conduct party primaries and resolve all disputes arising from their primaries between April 4 to June 3, 2022.
