Yakubu Tasks New INEC Commissioners On Credible Elections

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has charged newly appointed National Commissioners of the Commission to be firm in handling the public trust bestowed on them and be fair in their dealings to sustain the value of democratic election in the country.

The six commissioners namely, May Agbamuche-Mbu, Mohammed Haruna, Sam Olumekun, Kenneth Nnamdi Ukeagu, Rhoda Gumus and Modibbo Abubakar Alkali were earlier sworn in by president Mohammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja.

Welcoming them,including a new Resident Electoral Commissioner Olaniyi Olaleye Babalola at the INEC headquarters, Prof Yakubu canvassed reasons why they should deploy their vast knowledge and diverse experiences to the service of the country as unbiased referees.

While four of the Commissioners were returned back to the Commission, Mrs Rhoda Gumus, a Professor of Engineering, and Modibbo Alkali, a retired Major General in the Nigerian Army Responding on behalf of the Commissioners, Major General, Modibbo Abubakar Alkali (retired), assured of their commitment to serve without fear or favour.

Meanwhile, inline with the Commission’s Policy, Mr Olaniyi Ijalaye has been deployed to Ondo state as the Resident Electoral Commissioner.
