Since the return of the present democratic dispensation in Nigeria, dominant political parties have deployed the concept of zoning political offices to balance agitations of power struggle among different ethnic groups that make up the country. While the concept is viewed as a gentleman agreement by most of the parties, some observers believe it has helped to ensure national unity and cohesion. As the stage is set for politicking ahead the 2023 General elections, the two dominant political parties, the All Progressive Congress and the People’s Democratic party are yet to zone their presidential tickets,a development that has thrown up ongoing debate on the issue of competence and ethnicity factor in deciding who takes over from president Mohammadu Buhari. Demian Ogokeh on his part shared a contrary opinion indicating that zoning remains the lifeline for minority groups to take a shot at the nation’s number one seat. They also reacted on measures that should be put in place to reduce the rising trend of money politics in the nation’s political space. With the next general elections around the corner, it is expected that political parties do their homework as it relates to choosing candidates for various elective offices.
