Nembe Explosion: IDC Accuses FG Of Negligence, Calls For Immediate Investigation.
The Ijaw Diaspora Council (IDC) has drawn the attention of the Nigerian Authorities including the International Communities to the oil and gas explosion in the water ways and mangrove forests in Nembe area of Ijawland, South South Nigeria. The body which called for urgent intervention, further disclosed that interim inquiries from Petroleum experts indicate that the incident was caused by maximum pressure from piled up gas in the well, which over the years has witnessed several spills. A statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs, Pastor Kenneth Tamara further attributed the Nembe incident as a clear deviation to the Federal Government presentation at the just concluded Climate Change Summit in Glasgow Scotland as it’s contributions to global climate change. The body also accused relevant Government ministries and agencies of looking away while companies like Aiteo, Total and Shell pollute hundreds of Ijaw, ogoni and other communities. They however demanded that the United Nations and world leaders take immediate action to secure the commitment of the federal government to stop the Nembe explosion. The group further made case for independent investigation by trusted international organizations as well as commencement of ecological remediation and economic reparations in the locality.
