Sited in this hall are commissioners of environment in the 36 states and the federal capital territory and other major stakeholders in the environment sector. They are in Abuja for the 15th National council of Environment meeting which also is the highest decision making body on the environment in Nigeria. As expected, the minister of state for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor was on ground to welcome the respective participants and also intimate them of various achievements recorded in the last one year. Top on the list is the ogoniland cleanup with about 15.3 hectares of polluted lands so far recovered. The participants were further briefed on efforts by the ministry through implementation of various people oriented projects provided 74,413 direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians as at the 2nd quarter of 2021. The meeting had representation from other sister ministries and agencies. The theme of the 3 day conference is ” Appraisal of the emerging challenges and the opportunities in the environment sector: A call for actions towards the environment of our dreams.
