The world sight day is an annual global event commemorated every second Thursday of the month of October to draw attention to eye health and sensitization of the populace on the need for regular eye checks. As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to observe the day,the federal government as part of efforts targeted at reducing the burden of blindness in the country has restated commitment to ensure majority of Nigerians access comprehensive eye care. This the minister of Health, Osagie Ehinare said informed the decision by the ministry to integrate the primary eye care into the primary health care system with the objective to reachout to the underserved on remote areas of the country. Represented by the permanent secretary, Mahmuda Mamman,the minister further indicated other interventions aimed at reducing the nation’s prevalence rate of 0.78 percent for blindness. Other speakers in their remarks stressed on the relevance of the day to promoting the culture of healthy eye practices among Nigerians. The theme of the 2021 world eye day is ” Love your eyes”.
