As Nigeria joins other nations to commemorate the World Teachers Day, President Mohammadu Buhari has declared January 2021 timeframe for conclusion of ongoing reforms to reposition the teaching profession. At a ceremony to observe the day in Abuja, the president represented by the minister of state for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba indicated plans to work with other relevant stakeholders including state governments to achieve the targets that will reposition the 21st century teacher in Nigeria. He disclosed that the pilot phase for implementation of the reforms has already commenced with a review of retirement age for teachers from 65 to 70. On his part, Education Minister, Mallam Adamu Adamu represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Sonny Echonu highlighted some of the federal government approvals to attract the best brains into the teaching profession. As expected, the ceremony was spiced with parade match from teachers in the 36 states including the federal capital territory. Highpoint of the occasion was the emergence of Mrs Bridget Nwabueze and Samuel Ogunleye as best teachers in the nation’s public and private schools. Bolade junior grammar school won award for the best public school in Nigeria.
