The Court of Appeal currently has 33,647 appeals and motions pending in its docket compared with 45,775 at the end of the 2019/2020 legal year of the court. President of the court, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem who disclosed this at the opening of the court’s 2021/2022 legal year commended the justices of the appellate court for working hard to achieve 26.47% reduction in 2020/2021 legal year. In the period under review, Justice Dongban-Mensem noted that the court entertained 5,092 appeals in 2020/2021 and dismissed 2,169 appeals while 942 appeals were upheld. The President however used the opportunity to make case for upward review of salaries of judicial officers in the country. Also speaking, the Attorney General of the Federation and minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami appealed to the appellate court justices to ensure that the sacred integrity reposed in them remain sacrosanct at all times in order to foster and promote public confidence in all their judgments. Justices of the appellate court attended the ceremony which is said to be the first legal year in the history of the court.
