Nigeria has reached the commercial launch stage of a $300 million Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) Fund, marking the transition from fund structuring to active capital deployment aimed at expanding access to renewable energy across the country.

The fund was unveiled by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), Africa50 and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. It is designed to mobilise investment into distributed renewable energy projects, including mini-grids and standalone solar systems.

According to the partners, the fund is aligned with Nigeria’s efforts to expand reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity access and supports Mission 300, an initiative aimed at connecting 300 million people across Africa to electricity by 2030.

The commercial launch is seen as a signal of growing investor confidence in Nigeria’s distributed renewable energy market and is expected to help channel capital to communities and businesses that remain underserved by conventional power infrastructure.

Speaking at the launch, Aminu Umar-Sadiq, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, said the milestone demonstrates that Nigeria’s distributed renewable energy sector is ready to attract investment and scale.

Alain Ebobissé, Group Chief Executive Officer of Africa50, said the initiative combines local market expertise, investment capabilities and development support to convert Nigeria’s energy needs into investable opportunities.

The fund’s partners said distributed renewable energy solutions are expected to play an increasingly important role in closing electricity access gaps, supporting economic activity and strengthening energy security in Nigeria and across Africa.

Officials from SEforALL, the International Solar Alliance and the World Bank Group described the fund as a potential model for mobilising private capital and accelerating renewable energy investment across the continent.

The Nigeria DRE Fund will be co-managed by Africa50 and the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, with partners positioning it as a platform that could be replicated in other African countries seeking to expand energy access through distributed renewable energy solutions.
