The Social Democratic Party (SDP) senatorial candidate for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Olarewaju Osho, has pledged to promote food sufficiency in Abuja by harnessing the territory’s vast land resources for agricultural production.

Speaking during a roundtable discussion with members of the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) in Abuja, Osho said agriculture would be a key component of his development agenda for the FCT if elected to the Senate.

He said the FCT possesses significant agricultural potential and should be able to meet a substantial portion of its food needs rather than relying heavily on supplies from other parts of the country.

According to him, achieving this goal would require identifying available agricultural land, supporting farmers and creating an enabling environment for farming activities alongside urban development.

Osho noted that his development plans for the territory were outlined in his earlier “Aspire++” manifesto, which lists agriculture among its priority areas.

The SDP candidate said the FCT requires practical solutions to challenges affecting residents across its six area councils, adding that development should extend beyond infrastructure projects.

He argued that while road construction remains important, sustainable development in the capital must also focus on agriculture, healthcare, employment, youth empowerment, tourism and sports.

According to Osho, the territory’s vast land resources should be utilised more effectively to address rising food prices and improve economic opportunities for residents.

He said expanding agricultural activities could also create jobs for young people and enhance productivity in rural communities across the FCT.

The senatorial hopeful further pledged to use his position, if elected, to support policies and programmes aimed at boosting food production, improving access to agricultural support services and encouraging collaboration between the FCT Administration and local communities.

Osho said effective representation involves legislation, oversight, collaboration with the executive arm of government and regular engagement with citizens.

He also promised to maintain consistent interaction with residents of the six area councils to better understand their needs and ensure government interventions reflect local realities.

The SDP candidate expressed confidence that Abuja can become a model of food security and sustainable urban development through effective land-use planning and utilisation.

He urged residents to support candidates with clear development plans capable of improving their quality of life.
