The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has assured Nigerians living abroad that the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to improve security across the country and ensure safer conditions for citizens returning home.
Musa gave the assurance during an interactive meeting with members of the Nigerian community in Angola on the sidelines of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) in Luanda.
The Nigerian delegation to the AU summit was led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The session provided an opportunity for members of the diaspora community to directly engage government officials on issues affecting Nigerians abroad.
Also in attendance were the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa; and the Acting Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian Mission in Angola, Ambassador Maxy Ogbede.
Speaking at the meeting, Musa commended Nigerians in Angola for maintaining a cordial relationship with the country’s diplomatic mission and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling security challenges across Nigeria.
He said the Tinubu administration was strengthening the operational capabilities and manpower of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies to address threats to national security.
According to the minister, some of Nigeria’s security challenges are linked to instability in the Sahel region, which has had cross-border implications for the country.
“Every sector is receiving targeted interventions to enhance our national security framework,” Musa said, adding that comprehensive border management measures were being implemented to curb unlawful incursions.
He also reiterated the government’s commitment to integrating reliable data into national security planning and broader development strategies, noting that efforts to restore lasting peace and stability across the country remained on course.
In his remarks, the Minister of Interior, Tunji-Ojo, said the government had strengthened data protection and identity management systems, adding that improved collaboration among agencies was producing positive results.
Dabiri-Erewa, on her part, assured Nigerians in the diaspora of NiDCOM’s continued support, stressing that the commission remained committed to protecting their welfare and promoting opportunities that would contribute to national development.
The meeting formed part of engagements between government officials and Nigerians abroad aimed at addressing concerns within the diaspora community and strengthening ties between citizens overseas and the government.
