Patient Bill of Rights: 4 Medical Doctors Sanctioned, Over 20 Cases Recorded – FCCPC
In July 2018, the Nigerian Government launched the Patients’ Bill of Rights (PBoR) a document formulated by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to ensure that citizens’ rights in the healthcare sector are respected and protected. A 2016 study by Price Water-House revealed that 90 per cent of respondents associate healthcare in Nigeria with low quality, while over 80 per cent and over 70 per cent respectively, associate it with words like `rude’ and `fear’ as less than 20 per cent felt that the healthcare provided in Nigeria gave value for money. The issue of rights in healthcare are relevant today as they are in agreement with the global movement towards Universal Health Coverage which requires that health services are available for all. Speaking on the in road recorded by the introduction of the Patient Bill of Rights, at an interactive session with news men in Abuja, the Director General, Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, Babatunde Irukera said so far four Medical Doctors have been sanctioned for the violation Patient Rights. The FCCPC Director General, however, urged Nigerians to always utilise the opportunity given to them by the commission’s instruments of conflicts resolution and redress in order to have a better society.
