The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted a provisional licence to the Jigawa State University of Medical and Allied Sciences, making it Nigeria’s 70th state-owned university.

Speaking during the recognition ceremony in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, said the new institution would expand access to quality medical education and help address the country’s shortage of healthcare professionals.

He noted that establishing more specialised medical institutions is essential to producing the skilled healthcare workforce needed to meet Nigeria’s growing healthcare demands.

Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, described the recognition as a major milestone for the state, saying the institution, now the 328th university in Nigeria, is expected to serve as a centre of excellence for training medical and allied health professionals to strengthen healthcare delivery in Jigawa State and across the country.

Also speaking, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, said the recognition marks another important step towards addressing Nigeria’s shortage of healthcare workers.

Ahmad reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting states that are making strategic investments in education and healthcare through collaboration with the National Universities Commission and other relevant stakeholders.
