President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described Nigeria’s first military Head of State, the late General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, as an enduring symbol of national unity, discipline, and patriotism.
The President’s tribute was delivered by the Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Gwabin Musa, during the 60th memorial celebration held on July 29, 2026, in Umuahia, Abia State.
Speaking on behalf of the President, Musa stated that Aguiyi-Ironsi distinguished himself as a dedicated soldier who rose to become the first Nigerian General Officer Commanding the Nigerian Army before assuming leadership during a critical period in the country’s history.
”Although his tenure was brief, he demonstrated a firm commitment to preserving national unity, restoring stability, and maintaining the integrity of the Nigerian state,” Tinubu said in the address.
He added that the Federal Government remains committed to safeguarding democratic institutions and preserving the country’s unity through justice, tolerance, and mutual respect.
Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo also spoke at the event, reflecting on Aguiyi-Ironsi’s contributions to the military and national politics. Obasanjo remarked that the late general was a fine officer whose memory serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made to keep Nigeria united.
He called on current generations to protect the peace and institutional integrity of the Armed Forces.
Host governor, Dr. Alex Otti of Abia State, thanked the Federal Government, military leaders, and statesmen for honoring the late general in his home state. Otti noted that Aguiyi-Ironsi’s legacy of courage and sacrifice continues to inspire his administration’s focus on good governance and unity.
The solemn ceremony featured prayers for the Armed Forces, the nation, and the Aguiyi-Ironsi family. Notable attendees included former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, former Chief of Army Staff Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika, alongside active and retired military personnel, lawmakers, and traditional leaders.
