NELFUND Raises Alarm Over Universities’ Failure To Refund Students, Arbitrary Tuition Hikes

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has expressed concern over reports that some tertiary institutions are delaying or refusing to refund students whose tuition fees had already been paid before the Fund disbursed education loans.

NELFUND also condemned what it described as arbitrary increases in tuition and other institutional charges by some schools.

The Student Loan Scheme, an initiative of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was established to eliminate financial barriers to higher education and not to impose additional burdens on students.

In a statement issued by the Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, NELFUND said it is engaging the affected institutions and relevant authorities to ensure that eligible students receive due refunds.

The Fund also stressed the need for tertiary institutions to maintain fair, transparent, and reasonable charges in line with the objectives of the Student Loan Scheme.

“NELFUND remains committed to protecting the interests of students and preserving the integrity of this landmark national intervention,” the statement added.
