Open Defecation: Nigeria Targets Private Sector Partnership To Achieve 2025 Target.
As Nigeria work towards its target to end Open Defecation by 2025, the country is at the verge of overtaking India as the world leading nation in Open Defecation. This is as a joint monitoring report by the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Children Education Fund indicates that over 47 million Nigerians practice Open Defecation. This may not be far from reasons why President Mohammadu Buhari in November 2018 declared a state of emergency in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector, as well as launched a national campaign to jump-start the country’s journey towards becoming Open Defecation Free by 2025. It is however surprising that 10 months after, only minimal progress has been achieved, with Nigeria still having a poor statistics in Water supply and Sanitation. These according to the minister of Water Resources, Engr Suleiman Adamu at a two day workshop on Private Sector Forum Facilitated by UNICEF in Abuja places huge demands for private sector engagement.
