The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, has expressed concern over the Federal Government’s recent decision granting admission exemptions to candidates seeking entry into Colleges of Education.

Addressing a news conference in Abuja, the President of COEASU, Dr. Lawan Bazza, said the union was not consulted before the policy was announced.

While commending efforts aimed at increasing enrolment into Colleges of Education, Dr. Bazza stressed that education policies must not compromise the quality of teacher training or the future of Nigeria’s education system.

The union also reacted to resolutions reached at its National Executive Council meeting held in Warri, Delta State, where concerns were raised over poor salary structures, particularly in state owned Colleges of Education.

The union also highlighted the successful conclusion of the long awaited renegotiation agreement with the Federal Government, describing it as a major step toward improving conditions in the tertiary education sector.

Dr. Bazza called on the Federal Government to expedite negotiations with other education sector unions to prevent disruptions across tertiary institutions.
He stressed the need for harmonised agreements for both academic and non academic staff to ensure stability in the sector.
