Nigerian Army GOC’s Convoy Foils Ambush, Kills 5 Terrorists In Kebbi
Troops of the 8 Division, Nigerian Army, successfully neutralized five terrorists and recovered a significant cache of weapons after foiling an ambush on the convoy of the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major General Bemgha Koughna, near Mayama Hill.
The incident occurred while Major General Koughna, who also serves as the Commander of Sector 2 Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, was in transit to visit frontline troops deployed in Kebbi State.
According to a statement released by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for 8 Division, the convoy was navigating a forested area when it came under heavy fire from suspected members of the Lakurawa Terrorist Group (LTG).
“Demonstrating exceptional leadership and tactical prowess, Major General Koughna and his troops responded with overwhelming firepower, neutralizing five terrorists and repelling the ambush,” the statement read.
Following the firelight, a sweep of the surrounding area led to the recovery of a substantial arsenal and other items, including:
- One OJC Gun and one PKT Gun
- Two AK-47 Rifles with four magazines
- A bandolier of PKT ammunition and several rounds of 12.7mm ammunition
- Five motorcycles and two mobile phones
- A camel bag containing ₦840,000 in cash
Army officials noted that the successful counter-operation has disrupted the group’s logistics and sent a “strong deterrent message” to insurgents operating within the North West region.
The area remains under military surveillance as troops maintain a heightened presence to prevent further incursions. The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to eliminating terrorist threats and ensuring the safety of civilians across the general area.
