The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed an “unbreakable alliance” between the Nigerian Army and the Taraba State Government to intensify operations against terrorism and regional insecurity.
The commitment was made at a visit by the Governor of Taraba State, Retired Colonel Agbu Kefas, to the Army Headquarters in Abuja. The Governor was accompanied by federal lawmakers and members of the International Institute for African Security and Governance.
Strengthening Civil-Military Ties
Lieutenant General Shaibu emphasized that the Nigerian Army remains steadfast in its mandate to support civil authorities. He identified Taraba State as a critical component of the nation’s security architecture due to its unique terrain and security challenges.
The COAS praised Governor Kefas for his “decisive leadership,” specifically noting the state’s donation of land and operational equipment. He described the contributions as “force multipliers” that have bolstered the speed and reach of military interventions in the area.
Strategic Requests for Operational Efficiency
To further enhance combat readiness, the Army Chief called for improved infrastructure and community engagement, specifically requesting:
Power Supply: Support in providing stable electricity to the 20 Model Battalion in Sarti and the 23 Battalion.
Intelligence Sharing: Increased public sensitization to encourage citizens to provide timely and credible information.
Collaboration: Continued synergy between the state government and security forces.
“Community cooperation remains a decisive weapon in defeating terrorists and other criminal elements,” Shaibu stated.
Taraba State’s Commitment
In his response, Governor Kefas congratulated Lieutenant General Shaibu on his appointment and lauded the professionalism and sacrifices of the troops. He noted that the military’s presence has led to measurable improvements in the state’s safety.
The Governor highlighted specific areas requiring a reinforced military presence and pledged continued support, including assistance with accommodation for deployed personnel. Both leaders concluded the meeting by reaffirming a united front against criminal elements in the region.
