The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has concluded its investigation into 16 military officers arrested last year for alleged indiscipline, revealing that several now face accusations of plotting to overthrow the government.
In a statement released by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba and made available to Channel Network Afrique, CNA News, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) confirmed that the investigative report has been submitted to the “appropriate superior authority” for final action.
Key Findings and Legal Action
The probe, which began in October 2025, transitioned from general breaches of service regulations to more severe allegations of subversion. The DHQ noted that the conduct of certain officers was found to be “inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards” of the military.
Arraignment: Officers identified as having “cases to answer” will be formally charged before a military judicial panel.
Legal Framework: Trials will be conducted under the Armed Forces Act, which governs military justice and due process.
Next Steps: The DHQ emphasized that these proceedings are aimed at ensuring institutional accountability while upholding the right to a fair trial.
Commitment to Constitutional Order
The military leadership maintains that the crackdown is a necessary measure to preserve operational effectiveness and internal discipline.
”The measures being taken are purely disciplinary and part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order,” the statement read. Major General Uba further reiterated the AFN’s “loyalty and respect for constitutional authority,” distancing the broader institution from the alleged actions of the accused.
