The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has announced a significant shift in Nigeria’s automotive landscape, headlined by a total ban on the importation of used vehicles effective January 2026 and the commencement of a nationwide “End-of-Life” vehicle disposal policy in 2025.
Speaking at a news conference in Abuja, the Director General of the NADDC, Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, disclosed that the upcoming End-of-Life Policy is designed to formalize the disposal of unserviceable vehicles.
The initiative he said is aimed at creating a robust secondhand market and a circular economy, as a high percentage of vehicle components can be professionally recycled and repurposed.
Mr. Osanipin emphasized the scale of the new economic frontier, stating that the policy sector is projected to generate over $150 billion for the Nigerian economy.
According to him the growth is expected to be driven by the industrial salvaging of parts and materials that were previously treated as waste.
