FCT NUJ, DICAN Form Alliance To Enhance Ethical Standards, Check Quackery

The Nigeria Union of Journalists has formed partnership with the Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association (DICAN) to enhance professionalism, ethical standards as well as tackle quackery in the noble pen profession.

The mutual partnership aimed at promoting unity and positive image of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and its members was consummated when the DICAN Executive Council led by the Chairman, Idehai Frederick paid a courtesy visit to the first female Chairman of NUJ, FCT Council, Comrade, Grace Ike in her office in Utako, Abuja.

Addressing the delegation, Comrade, Grace Ike emphasised the importance of transparency, accountability, and collaboration in achieving shared goals among media professionals.

She said Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association has critical roles to play in promoting positive image of the Union, Nigeria and the people.

Comrade Ike maintained that by upholding the core values of accountability and transparency, the partnership would yield greater things as well as make lasting impact on the socio-political and economic development of the country.

“As we move forward, it is essential that we continue to work together, sharing our knowledge, expertise, and resources to achieve our goals. By doing so, we can create a brighter future for the Union and its people.

“We must lead by example, ensuring our actions reflect the values of integrity and collaboration. Together, we can create a stronger union and a better Nigeria.

“As DICAN leaders, it is essential to recognize the value of collaboration and accountability in achieving our goals.

“The Union’s willingness to collaborate with other organizations is critical, with a focus on mutual benefit and promoting the image of Union.

“Being a member of the NUJ is not enough, but active participation, including attending congresses and paying dues is necessary to ensure one’s voice is heard.

“The introduction of DICAN
Auditors to take account of the Association’s activities and finances was a welcomed idea as a step towards ensuring accountability and transparency.

“As ambassadors of Nigeria, it is essential that we conduct ourselves in a manner that reflects positively on our Union and its people.

“Lead by example, demonstrate transparency, accountability by working together and upholding these values, we can achieve great things and make a positive impact on our country and its people,” she said.

Earlier, Chairman, Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association, Idehai Frederick, informed the NUJ-FCT leadership of the recent Incorporation of DICAN as legal entity by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

He said the new chapter which was part of his campaign promises brings with it a huge sense of responsibility.

Mr. Idehai further stressed the need for inclusivity in decision-making especially on issues that affects members of the union.

“The Diplomatic Correspondent Association of Nigeria has officially been Incorporated, marking a significant milestone.

“This new chapter brings with it a sense of responsibility and accountability, essential for any successful organization, he said.

He also commended her style of leadership, describing her as a symbol of hope and progress for the union.

“Leadership is about inspiring collective action. By prioritizing transparency and building trust, we can achieve a lasting impact,” he added.

Both leaders agreed on the need to project NUJ FCT and DICAN positively on the global stage while supporting initiatives that strengthen the journalism profession like tackling of quacks and fake journalists.

The meeting concluded with mutual commitments to explore opportunities for collaboration, particularly in areas that foster unity and national development.

“As you embark on this new journey, it’s crucial to prioritize transparency and accountability.

“By doing so, you’ll build trust with your constituents and create a stronger, more resilient union.

“Your role as a leader is not just about making decisions, but about inspiring others to work towards a common goal.

“By leading with integrity and transparency, you will create a lasting impact that will be felt for generations to come,” Idehai concluded.
