Ahead of the Edo State Governorship Election, the Independent National Electoral Commission has cautioned the media against the spread of fake news and misinformation before and after the poll.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, gave the indication while briefing the media at the commission’s headquarters on preparations for the election.
Olumekun, who was represented by the Director, Voter Education and Publicity, Mary Nkem, emphasised the critical role of the media in ensuring the integrity of the upcoming election.
The Director also updated the media on preparations by the commission to ensure a hitch-free and credible electoral process.
Meanwhile, the Chief Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi in his presentation urged the media to always comply with the Nigerian media code of electoral coverage, emphasising on fairness and objectivity.
The Edo governorship election is slated for Saturday, 21st September 2024.
