The Federal Government has raised concerns over the state of basic education in the country,saying the huge investments over the years in the sub sector is yet to yield the desired results. Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Sununu gave the indication at the 25th Quarterly management meeting of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) in Abuja.
Dr Sonunu who lamented over the learning outcomes statistics in Nigeria and other challenges including the growing numbers of out of school children, dilapidated infrastructures in the system that have bedeviled the basic education system, challenged the Chairmen of SUBEB from across the states of Nigeria to look inwards and initiate measures to change the narrative.
While the picture painted by the minister might not be too pleasant,he was however quick to highlight strategies that may add value to the system.
On his part, the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Dr Hamid Bobboyi who presented the key note address harp on the need for collaboration that will redefine the national and state priorities for effective basic education delivery in Nigeria.
