As the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC makes effort to conduct free and fair credible off cycle Governorship elections in Kogi,Imo and Bayelsa States, Chairman of the Commission has cautioned the media against weaponising fake news and misinformation in the build up to the poll.
INEC chairman,Prof Mahmood Yakubu represented by National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee Sam Oyemekun,Prof Yakubu at a 2 day workshop organised for members of the INEC press corps in Akwanga, Nassarawa state reminded the media of their constitutional obligations to provide equal coverage and visibility to all political parties involved in the elections.
The INEC boss who noted that the media play a critical role in the electoral process, emphasised reasons for the workshop aimed at building the capacity of participants to deliver on the Mandate of credible reportage of the process. Other speakers at the workshop took turns to played up the importance of the media in the conduct of credible elections.
Earlier, Chairman of the INEC press Corps Segun Ojumu in his remarks commended INEC for putting together the DAI funded workshop saying it will help build capacity of participants in the discharge of their responsibilities especially as it relates to the electoral process.
The workshop is expected to tackle issues related to ethical safety practices and critical issues as it affects the Kogi,Imo and Bayelsa Governorship Elections.
