Insecurity: Army, UNOCT Join Force To Tackle Terrorism, Violent Extremism In Nigeria.

The Nigerian Army (NA) has expressed its readiness to partner the United Nations Office for Counter Terrorism (UNOCT) in fight against insurgency and violent extremist groups.

The Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lieutenant General, Taoreed Lagbaja who gave the assurance when he received a delegate from the United Nations Office for Counter Terrorism led by the Under-Secretary General, Vladimir Voronkov at the Army headquarters in Abuja said the partnership is apt at a time that the country is taking lead role in regional counter-terrorism efforts.

The COAS averred that the Nigerian Army has recorded large number of surrendered Boko Haram Terrorists through its kinetic and non-kinetic operations, while disarmament and demobilization are also being conducted in line with international best practice.

Gen Lagbaja noted that the visit will further strengthen global, regional and national responses through the promotion of partnership and capacity building.

Speaking, the Under-Secretary General, UNOCT, Vladimir Voronkov while commending the Nigerian Army’s efforts in counter-terrorism in the North East assured it readiness to deepen as well as increase its multilateral collaboration in addressing evolving terrorism threat on the African continent.

It is expected that the collaboration between the two party will help in addressing the issue of insecurities bedeviling some parts of the country.
