Senator Godswill Akpabio has been elected President of the 10th National Assembly.

He scored 63 votes to defeat former Governor of Zamfara state Abdulaziz Yari, who pulled 46 votes in the keenly contested election.

Both Akpabio and his deputy Senator Barau Jibrin were administered with the oath of office by the clerk of the National Assembly, SaniTambuwal.

In his inaugural speech, the Senate president thanked his colleagues for the privilege to serve and promised an independent National Assembly that will work with the Executive for the good of all Nigerians.

Senator Akpabio further said the national assembly under his leadership will give all necessary legislative backing to the removal of petrol subsidy by President Tinubu.

The former Minister of Niger Delta further assured that the red chamber despite it’s dominance by senators of the ruling All Progressive Congress APC will not be a rubber stamp to the Executive.
