Global Tobacco Related Deaths Hit 8m Annually – FG

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the 2023 “No Tobacco Day”, the Federal Government says globally, 8 million tobacco related deaths are being recorded annually .

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Olusesan Adebiyi who disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja said to check the situation, there is ongoing collaboration with stakeholders from the ministry of Agriculture and other line agencies to collate data of those involved in tobacco farming in order to fine alternative crops for the farmers.

Represented by the Director Public Health, Alex Okoh, the Permanent Secretary said government will continue to raise awareness in tobacco farming communities about the benefits of moving away from tobacco to sustainable crops.

Some development partners took turn to speak on tobacco and its adverse effects.

The theme for this year’s World No Tobacco Day is, We Need Food, Not Tobacco.
