The Standards Organisation of Nigeria says the process of amending its act to give it more bite is in an advanced stage in the National Assembly.

The Director General, SON, Mallam Farouk Salim disclosed this while speaking on the theme “The Role Of Standardisation In Building Resilient Non-Oil Sector” at the Annual Conference of the Commerce and Industry Correspondents Association of Nigeria CICAN, in Abuja.

Represented by the Assistant Director, Public Relations Department, Mariam Samson, the Director General said the Bill to repeal and enact SON Act when passed into law will criminalize the production, manufacturing and distribution of substandard products that could endanger the lives of consumers in the country.

He added that the stringent and stiffer penalties when introduced would stipulate that manufacturers and importers of fake products be not only fined but also bag jail term after prosecution.

The main theme of the conference is “The Role of the Non-Oil Sector Towards Economic Diversification, Gross Domestic Product Growth”.
