As the 2023 general election gathers momentum, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC Prof Mahmood Yakubu has once again assured Nigerians and the International Community of efforts to conduct a free and fair transparent election. Prof Yakubu gave the indication at a meeting with the delegation from the United Nation’s Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) and also with the West Africa Elders’ Forum at the INEC’s headquarters in Abuja. He said the decision by the Commission to introduce innovations for the conduct of the poll is to improve on the nations electoral process and ensure its outcome reflects the wishes of the people. Yakubu was however quick to express fears over the spate of attacks on the commission’s facilities. Both delegations at separate visits said their mission was to ascertain INEC readiness for next year’s election. More of these visits especially from the international community is expected in the coming weeks with less than three months to the 2023 general election.
