Judgement Day: Onnoghen Convicted, Barred From Holding Public Office

After over 10 sittings and countless arguments spanning several months, suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen has been convicted by the Code of Conduct Tribunal. Delivering judgement on the allegations of false and non declaration of assets levelled against Onnoghen, Chairman of the Tribunal, Danladi Umar pronounced the suspended CJN guilty of all six count charges based of evidences before the tribunal. Umar also stated that the Government had proven beyond reasonable doubt that the Supreme Court Judge had indeed breached the Code of Conduct for public officers. Justice Onnoghen’s conviction however includes him being removed from office as the Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the National Judicial Council with a ban, barring him from holding public office for the next 10 years.
