The calls being made by some prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP for the sack of the party’s National Chairman Iyiorcha Ayu have hit the rock as the National Executive Council of the party passed a vote of confidence in the National Working Committee led by Ayu.
About 397 members of the NEC who attended the meeting at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja unanimously voted in support of Ayu to continue as the chairman of the party.
The motion for Ayu to stay was moved by the Minority Leader PDP House of Representatives Caucus, Ndudi Elumelu and ably echoed by the Acting Chairman of the party’s Board oF Trustees, Adolphus Wabara for members’ support.
On the other hand, the party’s presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and Ayu in their separate speeches described the crisis rocking the party as internal affairs that will be resolved internally, urging members to be united for the task ahead.
Briefing journalists after the NEC meeting, the party through its spokesperson condemned the appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari of APC card-carrying members as INEC Resident Electoral Commissioners.
Rivers State governor and other notable governors were absent in the meeting.
