The federal government has commenced the process to key into the Transforming Education Summit initiative of the United Nations. The initiative launched by the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres in September 2021 at the 77th session of the UN general assembly is aimed at galvanizing commitments to action and greater public engagement to transform education.
Why Education remains one of the key sectors affected by the COVID-19 pandemic with about 675 million children across the globe affected by school closure, the summit intends to provide solutions to the challenge as well as work out modalities towards attaining goal 4 of the sustainable development goals.
Welcoming the initiative, the minister of communications and digital economy, Prof Isa Pantami said it will further drive the much awaited review of the nations education curriculum towards addressing the resultant effect of unemployment.
The agenda of the summit which attracted various key stakeholders in the education sector alongside development partners was set by the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) Chief Education Officer in Nigeria, Saadhna Panday- Soobrayan who in her remarks advocated for more accelerated progress towards SDG 4.
Meanwhile, Education Minister, Adamu Adamu represented by Executive Secretary of TETFUND Sonny Echonu urged participants at the session to develop a shared vision and commitment to transform education between now and 2023. While deliberations from the meeting is expected to reimagine how education will be delivered for millions of vulnerable and at risk learners around the world, such discussions will be further analysed at a pre summit event to be convened in Paris from 20th to 30th June 2022.
